Acquisition Candidate Identification & Screening Projects
Opportunity assessment of the US and UK markets for trigger sprayers and dispensing pumps. The study was conducted for an international packaging company considering entry into these markets. A recommendation was made to enter selected market segments in the US and UK based on the client’s proprietary technologies and anticipated growth in certain markets. TAPPA identified and screened specific acquisition candidates that should be pursued.

Acquisition screening assessment in the market for Modified Atmosphere Packaging equipment for fresh red meat. TAPPA evaluated the market in-depth and determined major trends transpiring in the use/acceptance of the various types of available technologies (e.g., high oxygen versus low oxygen environment, bulk versus individual package). A number of potential acquisition candidates were identified and evaluated. TAPPA presented a list of the key companies that should be pursued and the specific synergies of each potential acquisition candidate with the client, a major food & packaging equipment company not yet involved in this segment. TAPPA assisted with an introduction to the company and an acquisition was made.

Overview screening assessment of the U. S. market for various types of food processing, filling and packaging equipment. This was part of a major strategic assessment for a large multinational equipment company interested in expanding its portfolio. Various types of equipment were reviewed and evaluated in order to find a good fit with the client’s core business, including: pet food, cereal and salty snacks (including extruded snacks). Potential acquisition candidates were identified and briefly evaluated.

A screening assessment of opportunities in distribution for packaging products in various regions in the U.S. The study was conducted for an established distributor in the Northeast who was interested in expanding into other regions. An analysis was done to identify and evaluate various candidates. A prioritized list of potential target candidates was developed for the client.

Assessment of acquisition candidates in the contract packaging market for a major contract manufacturer/packer that was interested in expanding its base of operations. Numerous candidates were identified and evaluated. The companies with the best fit were described in detail and several candidates were recommended as potential acquisition targets.
Acquisition Due Diligence Projects
Due diligence assessment of a U.S. supplier of packaging products primarily for pharmaceutical applications. The product line included: oral syringes; dosage cups & spoons: closures; bottles; jars, as well as other products. A detailed analysis was done of the client’s overall position in the market and how it was viewed by a number of customers. After a detailed analysis, TAPPA did not find any “ skeletons in the closet” and it was determined that the acquisition candidate was viewed very highly in the marketplace. Shortly after the project was done the acquisition was completed.

Due diligence assessment of a supplier of orthopedic devices for specific leg and knee injuries. The project involved evaluating devices that were established in the market and others which were about to be launched. After a detailed analysis it was determined that the company had good upside potential and the acquisition was made.

Conducted multiple due diligence assessments for a supplier of labels for a private equity firm that had a strategy to acquire a major label supplier as a base. Then to use this base to continue to make additional bolt-on acquisitions throughout the U.S. to establish a larger overall presence in the market. TAPPA Group conducted VOC projects with customers for a number of acquisitions made by the company.

Acquisition assessment of an international supplier of toothpaste tubes for a private equity firm interested in entering into a JV with the company. After an extensive technology, market and competitive assessment was conducted it was recommended that the client not proceed with the deal due to various concerns (e.g., technology position and image in the market).

Assessment of an acquisition in the bulk bag-in-box and pouch market for foodservice products. The study was conducted for a private equity firm involved in a bid process. After a detailed evaluation the private equity firm opted to withdraw from the final round of bidding based on TAPPA’s recommendations.
Competitive Analysis & Benchmarking Projects
Competitive analysis in the market for nasal inhalers for OTC and prescription pharmaceutical products. Our client had a minor position in the market and before investing more in product development or contemplating an acquisition it wanted to obtain a detailed assessment of how its current technology and market position compared to key competitors. After a detailed assessment there were 2 major findings. The client had a stronger product offering than it originally thought, and there was a specific unmet need that it should try to address through product development.

The study was done for a market participant interested in expanding its position in the market. A detailed analysis was conducted assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a potential acquisition candidate. Recommendations were made in terms of certain products that should be pursued more thoroughly in specific markets. Recommendations were also made for specific areas to focus on for new product development.

Benchmarking assessment of packaging development capabilities of major multinational suppliers of beverage products; both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. The client, a multinational beverage company, wanted to objectively determine how its internal packaging development capabilities compared to those of its key competitors. It also wanted to determine the degree to which strategic alliances with packaging companies had been established for particular types of projects. The study was used internally for planning purposes and to assist it in developing a strategy to work more with packaging companies on packaging development projects.

The information was used for planning purposes and to upgrade existing equipment.

The client, a multinational foodservice company, wanted to objectively determine how its internal R & D capabilities compared to those of its key competitors, as well as the degree to which various services are subcontracted out. TAPPA conducted a major international assessment utilizing predominantly primary research as well as some secondary research. The study was used internally for planning purposes and to assist in determining potential restructuring of its R & D department.
Market Research & Analysis Projects
Evaluation of the North American market for the blow/fill/seal technology in the pharmaceutical industry. The study was conducted for a major pharmaceutical company interested in making a significant investment in the technology. The technology was believed to have potential for significant expansion into both OTC and prescription products. TAPPA did a comprehensive objective assessment of the blow/fill/seal technology versus other available technologies and provided a detailed “road map” for the best applications for the technology.

This was a detailed analysis of the retail market for case ready red meat products at the supermarket level conducted for a packaging materials company. TAPPA assisted the client in developing a business plan to enter the market.

Assessment of the North American and European markets for stand-up pouches. The project was conducted for a major packaging company interested in obtaining licensing rights for a stand-up pouch system (i.e., materials and equipment). It was believed that the market potential was limited based on line speeds and the equipment business proposition, which was a lease approach with a royalty per unit produced. TAPPA Group recommended that the client not pursue the business opportunity and the company followed TAPPA Group’s recommendation.

The client was a major European-based supplier interested in expanding into the U.S. market. Various segments/applications were evaluated including: medical; pharmaceutical; electronic products; construction and building material products, etc. The client did end up entering the market with a new plant in the U.S.

Evaluation of the U.S. market for confectionery packaging equipment. The study was conducted for a major multinational packaging equipment company that was interested in expanding its product line into the confectionery segment. Various markets were assessed including: individual hard candies in both twist wrapped and pouch formats; bagged/wrapped multi-wrapped confectionary products; cold-seal wrapped candy bars; and frozen confections. TAPPA assisted the client in determining specific machines that should be added to its product line.

Assessment of the North American pressure sensitive label market for wine. The study was conducted for a label supplier interested in expanding into the wine sector. The study focused on specific segments of the wine market that were conducive for pressure sensitive labels.
New Product Development Projects
A product development evaluation for a new line of packaging equipment. TAPPA used the SIMALTO technique to determine the optimal set of features that should be offered. A multi-task web-based survey was administered on-line. Specific selling prices were determined that users would justify for machines with specific feature sets. From the results of this project the client designed 2 new very focused packaging lines: a low speed and medium speed line.

Evaluation of the North American market for individually wrapped produce. The study was conducted for a U.S. based film supplier interested in marketing a systems approach with shrink film equipment and a family of shrink film products. The entire value chain was evaluated from the grower level, through various levels of distribution to retail. Significant market opportunities were identified for the client to pursue.

New product concept project for a consumer and commercial beverage dispensing technology concept for a venture capital firm interested in taking a stake in a concept being developed. A distribution channel assessment, coupled with a market evaluation uncovered a number of major problems with the concept. TAPPA determined the level of risk was too high to justify the investment, and negotiations were broken off shortly thereafter.
